Here are a few tips from Dr. VerHulst that might help relieve heartburn and acid reflux discomfort:
-Eat smaller amounts of food more often to avoid pressure in the stomach
-Avoid offending foods: coffee, chocolate, soft drinks and alcohol
-Change your diet to include 75% raw foods (fruits, vegetables and whole grains)
-For gentle relief wash a raw potato, put it in a juicer or blender, blend and mix with equal amounts of water and drink as needed
-At the first sign of trouble, drink a large glass of water
-Do not lie down for at least 1-3 hours following a meal
-Elevate the head of your bed with a 4-inch block
-When sleeping, lie on your left side (this keeps the bulk of the stomach lower than its upper opening).
-Enhance impaired digestion with with live food enzymes
-Try taking aloe vera to heal the stomach lining of the G.I. tract
-Some people find relief from apple cider vinegar and betaine HCL, 1 tablespoon before meals for more complete digestion and less delay in emptying the stomach
-Use natural enzymes for proper digestion. Take before meals. Pancreatin is best.
-Avoid antacids. Overly acid stomach does not cause heartburn. Antacids such as Maalox, Rolaids, Mylanta contain aluminum. Tums and others contain calcium. Both aluminum and calcium increase acidity, thus causing more problems. Furthermore aluminum has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease.
-Avoid prescription medications such as Pepcid AC, Prilosec,
Tagamet, Zantac and the like. They can block normal body processes, impair proper digestion of food and impede mineral absorption. Long-term use of these medications can damage the stomach lining and increase risk of benign and cancerous tumors.
·Avoid situations that cause stress and anger
·Avoid estrogen, e.g. birth control pills, menopause treatment. It
can cause the lower muscles of the esophagus to weaken.
·Avoid smoking; it aggravates heart burn.
